We all see the headlines about the opioid crisis, but what does it mean for VISTA members who are serving in affected communities? Whether or not your project specifically addresses the impact of opioid misuse, this webinar aims to increase your understanding of trends and structural factors that have impacted individuals and communities. Additionally, this webinar aims to identify some current approaches to mitigating opioid misuse and community and individual level impacts.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Gain an understanding of opioids and the history and trends leading to the current crisis in the United States
- Identify structural factors that correlate with opiod use and misuse
- Identify some current interventions and supports applied to combat the crisis
- Reflect on session content for relevance or application to VISTA project work
Our main speaker for this webinar is Dr. John McIlveen. Dr. Mcilveen is an Operations and Policy Analyst with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), Health Systems Division (HSD) and serves as the State Opioid Treatment Authority (SOTA) for the State of Oregon. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, has several years of direct clinical experience in treating patients with alcohol and drug disorders, and was the former Director of Assessment and Education and Associate Director of Research at a large substance abuse treatment facility for several years. Dr. Mcilveen's experience vast in this topic and we are happy to have him join us and present this webinar.
