Making resources more interesting

Hello all! Happy Wednesday!

I have been in the process of making resources to help make VISTA service more meaningful for the VISTAs in my program. Has anyone found ways in which they can make these resources less... well... dry? I want to make them something that people will want to read and learn from rather than just another resource dump that nobody will read because it's another guide.

Thank you! I hope you have a wonderful day!

Hello All

I have a resource binder that the members look through on a daily bases. I consently update the binder with the information especially when the orgainzations that I'm partnering send me flyers or updated information for their business. I do let the members know that if they can't find the information that they looking for to let me know.

Hope that helps.

Hi Kristie!

This is something I have been working on as well this year. Are your VISTAs close to you in location? If so, monthly Professional Development Trainings might work! For example, if there is a local college in your area that teaches an interesting resume writing class, maybe you and your VISTAs can attend that? Something that has been working for us is getting interested VISTAs to teach a Professional Development Training. One of my VISTAs is very passionate about getting a Federal Job after her service ends and she has taken multiple webinars and participated in multiple trainings about NCE Status. Because she had all that knowledge and experience, she recently facilitated a training about how the NCE status works for my other VISTAs and I. If your VISTAs are far away, maybe webinars or even Skype sessions might work. Hope this helps and hope you are enjoying  your year!

Thank you so much for your response, Jackie! That's very helpful. We are developing some webinars since we are spread out over ten states but I'm just trying to make them as interactive as possible.

That's amazing to hear about how your VISTAs are taking advantage of using this as a time for professional development and is even using what they've learned to empower and educate their peers. That's seriously incredible.

I hope you're doing well! Thanks again for taking the time to respond to this.

Hi Kristie,

I use canva.com to make visually interesting resources. It's a free graphic design website with a lot of templates. You can also embed links into your creations. I've used it to make monthly newsletters and an infographic on using your education award.

I also just recently just used flip quiz to create a jeopardy game about our VISTA project. I think it could be used during a webinar. https://flipquiz.com/board/rrp-vista-jeopardy/

Hey Kristie,

I'm having similar problems. I'm kind of new to the VISTA Leader role and I have 11 VISTAs that live in different regions too. So far I've been sending out weekly newsletters of various topics. I try to make them visually engaging. I also do VISTA highlights so members can see what others are doing. Another thing is we started was a VISTA Slack communication page. It's neat because it allows them to take charge in communicating and share documents with one another. That's been kind of a slow start, but at this point, I'm experimenting with different ideas.

If you ever want to chat my email is aneal@vahousingalliance.org. I'm always open to learning new things!
