Hi there!

I am not yet a Vista and am just beginning my research about all the program has to offer. I am 63 and am interested in knowing what the experiences have been of senior Vistas who are currently serving or have served in the past.

I am reading many positive posts on this this forum and would love input about your experiences.

Thank you so much!

Mary

I'm a new 63 year-old VISTA. Our PSO was the week of July 17th and was quite fun. I met many very nice people. I was a bit anxious about being thrown into a large group of recent college grads, but I was accepted by all the kids and included in VISTA activities & after hours play as well. I can't speak to the on the job aspect as I am in a bit of a unique position, assigned to a school I volunteered at prior. I am proud to be doing work atempting to eradicate poverty. I just hope my efforts do some good for the handfull of people they will affect. Good luck to you.

Thanks, John. It's good to hear you are being well received by the other Vistas and the program in general. Still doing some exploration at this point. I know it would be very rewarding. Thanks again for connecting.

I am 66 years old and am just beginning my second term as a vista.  I have 40 years of social work experience (about half in administration) and wanted to use my skills and experience to help others but not with the pressure or commitment of full time employment.  I found PSO to be very tedious as it as geared toward millenials.  Lots of useless team building and orienting VISTAs to poverty.  My first placement was a bust because it was a busy service center in which they only wanted me to be the receptionist.  Transferred to a different program that had never had a VISTA before and they couldn't figure out how to use me, especially considering that I would only be there for a year.  That was a bust, too.  Spent most of my time twiddling my thumbs.  My current assignment is perfect.  Im in the community alot and am working on research and organizing community gardens and Farmers Markets.   VISTA and sponsoring agency supervisors were very helpful and responsive all along.  Just be very careful when considering a placement and make sure that you will be happy with your job.  The VAD isn't really enough to answer these questions.  Hope this helps.  Jim
