Tips for finding local mini-grants

Hi!

I'm assigned at a new organization (less than 1 year operating) in Chicago,IL, and I was recently tasked with findng a grant for my organization to primarily fund general/operating support for particular projects such as a website. So, I've started researching on sites like Foundation Center, Guidestar, etc., and most foundations give bigger grants than what my organization can handle at the moment.

I want to find somewhat smaller grants from the range of $500-$2500, also called mini-grants. I know they're mostly local and some community foundations may give them. But, I am having trouble actually identifying foundations/organizations who may give mini-grants in my area in Illinois.

Does anyone have any tips that I can use to find foundations/organizations who award these mini-grants? Anything would be helpful!

Not that I have successfully applied and received any of these types of grants (yet...that part of my year is coming in a few months), the Foundation center grant search gives you, when available, the average grant size of the granting organization. You might be able to filter by that amount. Do you have access to the Foundation grant database? If not, check their webstie. Local libraries and other places sometimes have a computer set aside for people to use. Also, I think it's Bank of America (or Wells Fargo...eh) that hosts applications and information for hundreds of smaller foundations. I can't remember at the moment whether they listed the average award size, but you might check those listings.

Thanks for the information! I have plans to visit the library to utilize the Foundation Center's Database, but thanks for the tip of looking into Bank of America.

Hi I am in the same boat! I am also looking for mini-grants for my site in order to fund the purchasing of naloxone. Most mini-grants that we fit the criteria for are already passed deadline. I looked into BOA and Wells Fargo for grants and I believe all BOA grants are passed deadline and Wells Fargo does not offer grants for single issues or hospitals (my site is a program at a hospital that specializes in overdose prevention and naloxone distribution). If anyone knows of some mini-grants that we may qualify for please let me know! Thank you!

Walmart's small grants are fairly easy to get. Check the Walmart giving website and navigate to your area. Since Walmart basically has a location everywhere, you'll most likely find something.

I don't know about grants, however with a stipend that small you could probably organize a fundraiser program to raise those funds.
