PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: Support the ongoing efforts of prevention and outreach towards clients currently not accessing services as well as clients already utilizing services through agency resources. In line with the agencies strategic plan, the outreach counselor will continue to provide essential support in the areas of harm reduction, immediate supportive services with basic necessities of hygiene kits, harm reduction kits, access to food, and providing connections to the continuum of services that Larkin Street provides.

REPORTS TO: Program Manager and Assistant Manager of Prevention & Outreach
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- General administrative duties including data entry and analysis, filing, mail, and phones
- Maintain a safe and supportive drop-in space and coordinate the continuum of care for homeless and at-risk youth ages 12-24
- Provide group services to homeless and at-risk youth ages 12-24
- Street-based outreach services to homeless and at-risk youth ages 12-24, as well as community-based organizational outreach
- Making harm reduction kits including, safe shooting, smoking, and snorting kits
- Distributing supplies to high-risk youth ages 12-24
- Attend trainings for professional development
- Refer clients to other social service providers
- Assess clients on outreach and in the drop-in
- Conduct intakes and risk assessments with clients
- Take detailed notes on various systems to track client care and wellbeing
- Daily cleaning of the drop-in
- Preparing meals for clients with various nutritional needs
- Doing lite counseling sessions with clients
- Providing clients with information to medical services
- Escorting clients to and from different appointments if needed
- Working at other site to establish overall community with Larkin Street Youth Services
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Associates Degree or Certification in Counseling, Psychology or related field
- 1-2 years of experience working with high-risk youth in outreach, at a shelter, and/or within a supportive housing program
- Basic understanding of substance use and harm reduction
- Strong knowledge and understanding of how intersectionality impacts homeless and at-risk youth
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Word)
- Must be able to lift and carry 30+ lbs., and stand and walk for long periods of time
- Must be able to stand for 2+ hours at a time
- Must have a clean driving record and California Driver’s License
- Ability to work Monday to Friday 9 am – 5 pm, occasional weeknights and weekends
- Knowledge of San Francisco’s social services
- Be comfortable around animals (Dogs, cats, lizards, etc.)
- Ability to work full-time in the Haight
- Ability to work at other sites, including regular shifts at other locations
- Ability to establish boundaries with clients and staff
- Ability to work at HSRC and ECC site to support OA activities and engagement
- Ability to support special projects that are targeted at homeless youth in all districts of the City.
- Ability to support ECC collaborate projects in order to engage OA youth into services.
- Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL & LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
- Ability to speak in front of large groups of individuals
- Ability to multi-task and efficiently manage priority action items
- Excellent Customer Service skills
- Bilingual or Spanish preferred
- Requires ability to lift, transfer, push/pull, maneuver, and reposition 25 lbs.
- Ability to reach, bend and walk.
- Finger manipulation.
- Ability to comprehend complex materials.
- Ability to speak and write English clearly and accurately.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Counseling, Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, or a related field
BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE:
- Three to Four (3-4) years of progressive experience in education workforce development or related discipline.
- Experience working with adolescents as a vocational counselor/ job developer or in the field of public relations Experience in working in a multi-cultural, diverse environment. Highly desired.
