NOTE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, VISTA leader In-Service Trainings (ISTs) are currently on hold. For the latest information about adjustments to VISTA service during the pandemic, please check the VISTA COVID-19 FAQs at www.nationalservice.gov/coronavirus.
AmeriCorps VISTA provides VISTA Leader In-Service Training, a 3½-day, in-person training and skills-building opportunity for AmeriCorps VISTA leaders. This in-depth training builds on the learning you started in the online VISTA Leader Orientation on the VISTA Campus and offers a deeper exploration of the transformational model of leadership that is at the heart of the VISTA leader role.
Leader In-Service Training is highly interactive, providing time to interact with other leaders, discuss your experiences, and gain ideas you can implement. Because you already have real-world experience in your leader role, you'll be able to apply learnings from the training immediately.
- Transformational leadership and VISTA leader roles
- Communication: The core of leading effectively
- Conflict management: practical approaches
- Leading and facilitating effective meetings
- Promoting VISTA project sustainability
- Leading from a distance
- Guiding members to high achievement
- Leader well-being and resilience
All VISTA leaders are expected to attend Leader In-Service Training.
I enjoyed learning how to communicate effectively and plan to apply this when working with my team.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU! The training meant so much to me and I will never forget this experience.
The most beneficial part of this training was the opportunity to exchange ideas and resources with other VISTA leaders
I enjoyed learning new facilitation methods and how the instructors gave us the "behind the music" explanation of why we were doing an activity.
I received great ideas on how to recruit new VISTAs and will meet with my supervisor to discuss the ideas.
AmeriCorps VISTA members are not required to attend an In-Service Training, but those who sign up are required to attend the event in its entirety. Before applying to attend, VISTAs should first check their calendar to make sure there are no conflicts and receive approval from their supervisor to attend.
For VISTAs who are selected to attend, the AmeriCorps VISTA program will arrange and pay for round-trip travel to the event and reimburse for approved costs like airport parking.
VISTAs are paired up to share a hotel room during the In-Service Training. The AmeriCorps VISTA program arranges and pays for hotel room and meals during the training.
