Based on the "Lifeboat" exercise most everyone knows, this team-building exercise has teams of VISTAs assess 15 poverty situations and determine which 8 will receive benefits and which benefits are most appropriate given the dollar limit.  Allow 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.  The instructions for how to run the exercise are at the end of the pdf.

After talking with others at my office about retention and the struggle that VISTA's go through, I decided to put together a simple guide for my VISTA's.  Feel free to edit the guide as you see fit.

I created this presentation as a resource for my VISTAs in creating their sustainability binder. Most of the resources I found on the binder were focused on WHAT to put in it. This presentation focuses on HOW to put it together. I hope you find it useful.

Our organization uses the Work on Purpose curriculum throughout the year as topics at some of our monthly member trainings. These trainings focus primarily on personal growth and development and how you can make a social impact, which ties right in to our goals as VISTA members. This curriculum is a favorite among our members and one of the most well-received throughout the year. Here is the description of Work on Purpose provided by Echoing Green:

"Echoing Green's Work on Purpose program inspires and equips those in the first decade of their careers to realize their unique way to make a social impact—be it as a nonprofit or social business employee, an artist-activist, an effective board member, a high-impact volunteer, a social entrepreneur, or in any number of other potential roles. Through this program, Echoing Green leverages life and work lessons from its social entrepreneurship Fellows to provide inspiration and frameworks to support a wide spectrum of young people seeking to make the world a better place in a way that is uniquely right for them."

Our organization created this document to help VISTA members think though their projects each week and highlight how they are building capacity. Member fill it out before they meet with their supervisor each week and supervisors keep these to use when evaluating VISTA member preformance. It ask the member to list all systems and project they have worked on each week, how the projects helps our organization and how they are going to ensure sustainablity. Finally there is a place to write one recent accomplishement and request their supervisor's help.
