Totally Out of Hand

Option 1:

If a conflict cannot be handled between those involved or under the guidance and assistance of higher management, you may want to seek an outside mediator. This person should not be involved in the situation, nor should s/he be part of one group involved or the other.

Option 2:

Do not hesitate to contact the Corporation for National & Community Service office in your state. Your state office is a resource and can be of assistance when problems arise. If the conflict is particular to the VISTA member role or site, and you judge a mediator would not be helpful, CNCS is an ideal resource.

Option 3:

Leave the situation until it diffuses. If someone cannot calm down, take some time for all parties to take time to calm down.

Option 4:

Diffuse the situation by practicing reflective listening. This gives everyone the opportunity to be understood and heard.
